MUMBAI: As many as eight cars have gone missing from South Mumbai's Jagannath Shankar Sheth Road in the last three days. Investigators said such instances were likely to increase as many convicts are out of police custody after serving terms for vehicle thefts. "Vehicle thefts are often committed by garage mechanics or those who tow the vehicle," the investigator said.
The LT Marg police said the gang targets bikes like Hero Honda Splendor, Bajaj Pulsar and Honda Activa which have a good resale value.
Since Saturday, seven bikes and a Santro were stolen from a single stretch on Jagannath Shankar Sheth road, a short distance away from LT Marg police station and the Mumbai Police Commissionerate.
On Monday morning, cloth merchant S Dattali lodged a complaint with the LT Marg police that his vehicle had been stolen from the road. "I saw my car on Saturday. The next day my brother and I planned to go to our shop in Mangaldas Market, but the vehicle was missing," he said in the complaint. Dattali lodged complaint after searching the entire area.
An LT Marg police officer said Dattali used the car just once a week to go to his shop. "The thieves are unknown but they are suspected to be well-versed with the mechanisms of a car. They could be garage mechanics in the vicinity." None of the stolen vehicles had security devices installed, police said.
